| Obverse description | Bare head of Marcus Antonius facing right, with short curly hair and a full beard, rendered in the vigorous portraiture style characteristic of late Republican coinage. The bust is truncated at the neck and depicted with strong, individualistic facial features. The encircling legend M•ANTONIVS•III•VIR•R•P•C• — identifying Antonius as one of the tresviri rei publicae constituendae — runs around the periphery. The field is plain, and the design is contained within a border of dots. |

Issued in the chaotic months following the assassination of Julius Caesar, this denarius belongs to the series struck under the joint authority of the Second Triumvirate. P. Clodius, named on the reverse as moneyer, was one of several officials retained to manage mint operations during Antony's eastern campaigns — a bureaucratic continuity Antony was careful to maintain as he positioned himself against both the Liberatores and, eventually, Octavian.
RRC 494/17 is among the better-documented varieties of this emission. The series as a whole was struck in substantial volume to fund the military build-up preceding Philippi.
