Additional information

Charles II of Spain, as Count of Luxembourg, issued this coin during the final years of a reign defined by his catastrophic physical and mental incapacitation — a product of generations of Habsburg inbreeding so severe that contemporaries debated whether he was even capable of ruling. He died without an heir in November 1700, the very year this piece was struck, triggering the War of the Spanish Succession and ultimately ending Habsburg rule over Luxembourg entirely. The timing is precise: this demi sou may have been struck months before the dynasty that issued it ceased to exist in the male line.
