| Reverse description | Nike, the winged goddess of victory, is depicted in dynamic right-facing composition driving a two-horse biga at full gallop, holding a goad in her right hand and the reins in her left. The horses are rendered with vigorous movement, conveying speed and triumphant energy characteristic of Syracusan victory coinage. In the lower field below the horses appears the control mark Θ, while an earring or lunar symbol is placed in the upper field above the biga. The exergue carries the magistrate's inscription ΕΠΙ ΙΚΕΤΑ, identifying the issue with the strategos Hicetas. The composition reflects the high artistic standards of the Syracusan mint during the early third century BC. |
