Vasselay, modern Varzy in Burgundy, was one of dozens of Merovingian minting places operating under the authority of semi-autonomous monetarii — private moneyers who held the right to strike in the king's name but largely governed their own output. Austrulfus is attested only through surviving tremisses; no documentary record of him exists. The monetarius system meant quality and weight standards varied considerably from one workshop to the next, and Vasselay issues are scarce enough that die linkages across known specimens remain poorly established.
