Honoré III became sovereign of Monaco in 1733 at the age of nine, with his mother acting as regent. This issue dates to the early years of his reign, when the principality's coinage was largely a practical exercise in asserting local authority within an orbit heavily dominated by France. The copper denominations of this period circulated hard in Monaco's small economy and survivors in any condition above Fine are genuinely uncommon.
