Reverse description A bold rampant lion passant-rampant to the left occupies the central field, contained within a beaded or reeded inner circle. The lion is rendered with characteristic sixteenth-century Netherlandish vigor, with raised forepaws and an expressive mane. The date 1577 is incorporated into the reverse legend, which runs along the outer periphery of the coin. The motto IN SPE ET SILENTIO appears as the reverse inscription, reflecting a personal or dynastic device. The hammered technique results in some weakness and irregularity in the strike, consistent with period production at a small lordship mint.
