Obverse description At center, a crowned Burgundian cross with a firesteel (fusil) displayed at its intersection, the arms of the cross extending to the coin's edge. The date is divided by the horizontal arms of the cross, one half appearing in each field. A mint mark is positioned at the top of the die. The surrounding legend in Latin reads continuously around the periphery, identifying Philip II as King of Spain and lord of the Low Countries.

Reverse description A crowned coat of arms of Philip II occupies the central field, encircled by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece with its characteristic fleece pendant at the base. The heraldic shield displays the complex quartered arms of the Spanish-Habsburg dynastic union. The Latin legend is divided into two registers, appearing above and below the central armorial device, together forming the devotional motto associated with Philip II.
