Additional information

The four-ducat pieces of Sigismund III Vasa were not standard circulation currency — they were prestige strikes, almost certainly produced as diplomatic gifts or court presentations rather than for commerce. By 1612, Sigismund was simultaneously King of Poland and a claimant to the Swedish throne, a dynastic entanglement that consumed enormous political energy and treasury resources. Kraków's mint was then under the administration of Jakub Zadzik's era of royal fiscal pressure, producing large-denomination gold partly to project royal authority at a moment when that authority was being contested on multiple fronts.

Kop. 1416 is among the rarer multiples in the coronation ducat series. Few survived outside treasury hoards.
