| Additional information |
Gdańsk retained the unusual privilege of operating its own municipal mint under Polish royal authority, a concession extracted through the city's considerable economic leverage as the dominant Baltic grain entrepôt. The four-ducat denomination was never a circulation piece — it was struck for diplomatic presentation, gifting among the merchant patriciate, and ostentatious display at a time when Gdańsk's burghers commanded fortunes that rivaled minor nobility.
Władysław IV's reign saw repeated friction with the city over trade monopolies and military contributions, making these presentation strikings a pointed exercise in political diplomacy on both sides. Kop#7555 is among the scarcer multiples from this mint's output.
