The Cumberland Jack was struck to commemorate the departure of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, to Hanover in 1837. Because of the Salic law which prevented women from taking the Hanoverian throne, Victoria had to settle for the British one, and sent her cousin to Germany. The English people did not like him and there were celebrations when he left! Many copies of the Cumberland Jack show, instead of St. George on a horse, the duke with the face of a monkey.
