Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms at center, comprising a quartered shield bearing castles and quinas (five-dot escutcheons), surmounted by an ornate crown. The mint mark 'R' appears to the left and 'P' to the right of the shield, referencing the Porto mint. A beaded inner circle frames the armorial device, with the peripheral legend reading IO III PORTUGALIE AL R disposed around the outer field in Latin characters. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered gold coinage of João III, with an irregular flan typical of the period.
