| Reverse description | Central device displays the Cross of the Order of Christ — a large, bold cross pattée with pointed terminals occupying most of the field, with a five-petalled rose ornament placed in each of the four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross. The circular legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer) surrounds the cross, separated by small floral stops, and runs along the full circumference of the coin. The design is rendered in high relief with a crisp milled border. The composition is austere and heraldic, reflecting the religious and imperial symbolism of the Portuguese monarchy. |
