Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms, featuring the traditional escutcheon with the quinas (five shields in cross arrangement, each bearing five bezants) and the bordure of castles, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown with ornamental mantling. A quadrefoil ornament is placed to each side of the shield in the field. The circumferential legend in Latin runs along the full periphery of the coin within a beaded border.
