Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing five escutcheons in saltire, each charged with five bezants (quinas), set within a decorative cartouche surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is flanked by ornamental flourishes typical of late-medieval Portuguese hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading +IOHANES:II:R:P:ET:A:D:GVINEE, identifying the issuer as João II, King of Portugal and the Algarves, Lord of Guinea. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan and bold relief of hammered gold production. The overall design reflects the confident heraldic style of the Avis dynasty under João II.
