| Obverse description | Central field features the crowned royal arms of Portugal — a quartered shield displaying the Portuguese quinas (five bezants arranged in quincunx) and the castle of Castile, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The mint mark 'L' for Lisbon appears to the left of the shield, with the Roman numeral 'I' flanking the arms on either side, denoting Philip I of Portugal. A beaded inner circle frames the shield, with the Latin royal legend disposed around the periphery within a toothed outer border typical of hammered gold coinage of the Iberian Peninsula. |

| Reverse description | Central field displays a plain cross of the Order of Christ, bold and rectilinear, set within a beaded inner circle. The four quadrants formed by the cross are unadorned, preserving the austere devotional character of the design. The surrounding field bears the Latin motto legend disposed around the periphery, separated by dot stops, within a toothed outer border consistent with hammered technique. The overall composition reflects the strong crusading and religious iconography associated with Portuguese royal gold coinage of the late sixteenth century. |
