| Obverse description | Central field features the crowned royal arms of Portugal — a quartered shield displaying the Portuguese quinas (five bezants arranged in quincunx) and the castle of Castile, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The mint mark 'L' for Lisbon appears to the left of the shield, with the Roman numeral 'I' flanking the arms on either side, denoting Philip I of Portugal.
