Reverse description A bold Portuguese Cross of the Order of Christ occupies the central field, rendered in the characteristic double-barred or squared cross form with flared terminals, set within a plain inner border. The surrounding Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer) runs along the coin's periphery, separated by a small ornamental stop at the top. The flan is irregular, as is typical of hammered coinage of this period, and the design is struck with moderate relief.
