The cruzado novo — revived under Pedro II after decades of monetary chaos stemming from the Restoration War against Spain — was part of a deliberate effort to restabilize Portuguese silver coinage following the 1668 peace treaty. Portugal's currency had been debased and manipulated throughout the conflict, and this issue belongs to the brief window of fiscal reconstruction before Brazil's gold discoveries shifted the entire monetary emphasis of the empire.
The Lisbon mint's output for 1686–87 is distinguished in Gomes between two die varieties (P2 72 and P2 73), primarily differentiated by crown punch details.
