Reverse description A facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth I rendered in a style reminiscent of Tudor-era portraiture, depicting the monarch wearing an ornate jewelled flat cap with feather plume and an elaborately decorated collar. The circular legend around the periphery reads 400th ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIFE OF QUEEN ELIZABETH I, interrupted at the base by the denomination inscription Au. 1/2 oz. CROWN within a recessed panel. Additional information

The "Elizabeth I" in this pairing refers to Elizabeth I of England, whose reign saw the Isle of Man formally granted to the Stanley family — Earls of Derby — under a crown lease that shaped Manx governance for over a century. The 2003 issue belongs to the Isle of Man's long-running program of dual-monarch commemoratives, which the Pobjoy Mint produced under contract.

At .9999 fineness, this is four-nines gold — purer than the traditional British sovereign standard of .9167.
