Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any coins bearing his effigy entered circulation in most Commonwealth territories. Newfoundland, still a self-governing Dominion at the time, was no exception — no official crown was struck for circulation. This piece exists as a pattern or fantasy issue, catalogued under the X# prefix precisely because it falls outside the regular series. The X#1b designation suggests at least minor variety differentiation among what was almost certainly a very small production.
