Obverse description Crowned effigy of King Juan I facing left, rendered in low relief in the medieval Castilian style typical of hammered billon coinage. The bust is unadorned save for a prominent multi-pointed crown surmounting the head, with rudimentary facial features and visible neck. The encircling Latin legend reads IOHANES REX, partially legible around the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan. The field is plain, and the overall die work is characteristic of late 14th-century Castilian minting practice.
