Obverse description The civic emblem of Chios, a sphinx, is depicted seated to the right upon a low ground line, its wings folded against its body and its leonine haunches rendered in careful detail. The head of the sphinx is turned slightly, presenting a profile silhouette characteristic of Hellenistic Ionian bronze coinage. To the right of the sphinx stands a tall grain ear, serving as a secondary symbol in the field and referencing the agricultural prosperity of the island. The flan is irregular and the relief, though worn, retains the bold, confident engraving style typical of the Chian bronze series of the late Hellenistic period. No legend appears on this face.
