Pheneos was a minor Arkadian polis whose coinage output was limited and sporadic — a direct reflection of its political instability during the fourth century. The city changed hands repeatedly during the conflicts between Sparta, Thebes, and the Arkadian League following Leuktra in 371 BC, and local bronze issues like this one were struck in gaps between those upheavals rather than as part of any sustained civic program.
