Reverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms is displayed in the central field, consisting of the characteristic quinary arrangement of escutcheons charged with bezants, enclosed within a bordered shield. The heraldic device is rendered in the simplified, high-relief hammered style typical of Manueline copper coinage. The shield is centrally placed within a circular Latin legend which surrounds the entire design. Numerous lettering variations are recorded across the different sub-types of this group.
