Reverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms occupies the central field, depicted in a schematic hammered style consistent with early sixteenth-century ceitil coinage. The shield is shown either surmounted by a crown or accompanied by three roundels (bezants) arranged around the escutcheon, with variation existing across die types. A circular Latin legend surrounds the armorial device, mirroring the obverse inscription. The overall execution reflects the irregular, artisanal quality characteristic of hammered base-metal coinage of the reign of João III.
