Reverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms, rendered in the heraldic style of the early sixteenth century, occupying the central field of the coin. The shield corresponds to the 4th or 5th type as classified by Magro, featuring the characteristic arrangement of quinas (escutcheons charged with bezants) within the bordure of castles. The arms are enclosed within a roughly circular border formed by the surrounding legend. The die work, though bold, reflects the irregularities typical of hammered copper coinage of this period.
