Ercole II d'Este ruled Ferrara, Modena, and Reggio at a moment of intense geopolitical pressure — the Este were perpetually caught between French and Imperial ambitions, and Ercole spent much of his reign managing that balance by marrying Renée of France while remaining a nominal Imperial vassal. Small copper issues like this cavallotto kept local markets liquid during a period when silver was being hoarded or remitted northward to fund Habsburg campaigns. The denomination was a workhorse of street-level commerce, not a prestige issue.
