Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the crowned Genoese portal (porta) depicted frontally with three towers, surmounted by a prominent fleur-de-lis finial that breaks through the upper legend. The design reflects the traditional civic emblem of Genoa as adapted under French royal authority. The surrounding Latin legend, partially interrupted by the portal motif at the top, reads FRANCISCVS * REX * FRAN * IA * D, identifying Francis I as King of France and lord of Genoa.
