At caernarfon, king Edward I surpassed
even his own high standards of castle- building. The result is a
masterpiece of massive proportion and regal style with towers and
turrets dominating the skyline. The walls and towers have `bands`
of contrasting coloured stone, inspired , possibly by the great
walls of Constantinople, one of the wonders of the ancient
world.
