Reverse description The civic arms of Besançon — a displayed imperial eagle — occupy the center of a notched (cusped) shield, flanked on either side by the last two digits of the year of issue. The shield is set within an inner beaded circle against a plain field. The circumferential Latin legend + MONETA : CIVITA : BISVNTINA encircles the entire design, identifying this as the coinage of the city of Besançon.
