The California Redwood Association issued these novelty pieces as promotional items, cut from actual coast redwood (*Sequoia sempervirens*) rather than printed on paper. The grain direction and natural variation in the wood mean no two examples are identical, which creates routine inconsistencies in the laser-etched or stamped text that are features of the medium, not errors.
Redwood was chosen deliberately — the Association's entire purpose was promoting the commercial timber industry, so the material was the message.
