Additional information

The Regency of Algiers ceased to exist as a functioning political entity in July 1830, when French forces captured the city and the last Dey surrendered. Yet coinage continued to be struck in the name of Mahmud II for several years afterward — this piece being among those issued during the anomalous interregnum when French military administration tolerated, or simply failed to suppress, the continuation of Ottoman-format fractional silver for local commerce. The tughra of a sultan who no longer exercised any authority over Algeria appears here as a ghost of a vanished suzerainty.
