Obverse description Central field dominated by a crowned heraldic shield bearing the arms of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, rendered in a crude hammered style typical of late 16th-century ecclesiastical coinage. The shield is surrounded by a roughly circular Latin legend reading ERNES BA DV EP LEO, abbreviated for Ernest, Duke of Bavaria and Bishop of Liège. The lettering is irregularly spaced around the periphery, consistent with the hammered technique of the period. The overall design exhibits the characteristic flat and somewhat uneven strike expected of copper brûlé coinage of this era.
