| Obverse description | Draped bust of Ernest of Bavaria, Prince-Bishop of Liege, facing right, with ruffled collar and elaborately curled hair, rendered in low relief in the late Renaissance hammered style. The effigy occupies the central field, enclosed within an inner beaded circle. A Latin legend encircles the periphery, incorporating the date 1586, separated by pellet stops. The flan is irregular, typical of hammered coinage of the period, with flat areas and some surface porosity. |

| Reverse description | Central quartered shield of arms displaying the heraldic devices of Ernest of Bavaria's combined territories: the lozengy field of Bavaria in the first and fourth quarters, and the lion of Liege in the second and third quarters, with an escutcheon of Bouillon at the base. The shield is set within the central field, flanked by decorative rosette stops, and enclosed within an inner beaded circle. The Latin titular legend of Ernest of Bavaria as Bishop of Liege, Duke of Bouillon, and Count of Looz runs around the periphery, with the denomination XII indicated at the base of the coin below the shield. |
