Additional information

John of Bavaria never took holy orders and was consecrated neither priest nor bishop — he ruled Liège as prince-bishop purely through dynastic appointment, backed by his brother William II of Holland. His tenure was defined almost entirely by violent conflict with the Liège commons, culminating in the Battle of Othée in 1408, where he crushed the urban militias with Burgundian assistance and imposed punishing reparations on the city. Billon small change like this brûlé was the currency of daily life for the very population he was suppressing.
