Obverse description Rotund boar advancing left in schematised Celtic style, the body rendered with characteristic abstraction typical of late Iron Age Cantian coinage. A pellet-in-ring motif is positioned beneath the animal, serving as a decorative filler element common to this series. The overall composition is set within an irregularly shaped flan with no inscription or legend. The surfaces show the characteristic roughness of a cast and then struck bronze flan.

Additional information

The Cantii occupied the southeast corner of Britain — roughly modern Kent — and were among the tribes encountered directly by Caesar during his expeditions of 55 and 54 BC. Whether this issue predates or postdates that contact is unresolved, but the tribal coinage of the region shows clear evidence of continental influence absorbed through long-standing cross-Channel trade with Belgic Gaul. Van Arsdell 154-05 is a minor variety within a small series, and the bronzes of this tribe survive in far lower numbers than the gold and silver issues.
