The Administration des Subsistances Militaires was the French Revolutionary body responsible for provisioning armies in the field — this bon is a military subsistence voucher, not a public banknote. Issued at Nice in 1793, it functioned as internal military scrip, circulating among troops and suppliers at a moment when the assignat was already deteriorating and coin had effectively vanished from daily transactions.
Nice had only been annexed to France in 1792, ceded by the Kingdom of Sardinia under duress. Local-issue scrip from this period and place is consequently rare in any form.
