| Reverse description | Four Gothic letters arranged in cruciform disposition around a central ring, forming a cross-shaped monogram typical of Bolognese medieval civic coinage. A crayfish (gambero), the traditional heraldic symbol of Bologna, is positioned at the apex of the cross. The encircling legend, rendered in uncial Latin script, identifies Bologna by its celebrated epithet as the mother of learning. The composition is spare and emblematic, consistent with the hammered silver coinage of the Papal States in the early fifteenth century. |
