Obverse description Oval cantonal shield bearing a rampant bear, the traditional emblem of Appenzell, set within an elaborate baroque cartouche with scrolled foliate ornaments. The shield and cartouche are centrally positioned within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads MONETA APPENZ in Latin, with separating mullet stops, running along the outer rim of the coin.
