Reverse description Within a double trilobe inner border, a long cross divides the field into four quarters; the first and fourth quarters are cantoned by a crown, while the second and third quarters are cantoned by a fleur-de-lis, a composition emblematic of the royal French coinage of the late 15th century. The surrounding legend + SIT* NOMEN* DNI* BENEDICTVM — 'Blessed be the name of the Lord' — is rendered in Latin, a devotional inscription standard on the billon coinage of Charles VIII. The design reflects the standard type struck at multiple French mints during his reign.
