| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the crowned French royal shield semé of fleurs-de-lis, surmounted by a small crown at chief and flanked on each side by a coronet, the whole set within a double trilobe inner border. The circular legend, separated from the inner design by a beaded or linear border, reads KAROLVS FRANCORVM REX, punctuated by mullets or double superimposed points depending on the mint variety. The overall composition is characteristic of the late medieval French hammered silver coinage, with the arms rendered in bold, stylized relief. |
