A trade token note issued by a Chicago grocer or food wholesaler, almost certainly produced by one of the city's many small commercial printers active in the mid-twentieth century. These private scrip pieces circulated as store credit or employee benefit instruments — common in the Chicago retail food trade before standardized payroll and consumer credit displaced them entirely. Belmont Quality Foods has left no significant archival trace, which suggests a neighborhood-scale operation rather than a regional chain.
