Obverse description Central shield bearing an X with stars, superimposed on crossed sword and crozier in saltire, surmounted by a bishop's mitre. The arms and implements are rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style typical of early seventeenth-century Swiss ecclesiastical coinage. The legend runs around the periphery within a beaded border.

Additional information

Hildebrand Jost's tenure as Bishop of Sion was consumed almost entirely by a constitutional struggle with the Seven Dizains — the powerful local communes of the Valais — over who held ultimate sovereignty in the region. The conflict, which dragged through the 1620s, ended with the bishop effectively stripped of temporal authority, making these billon issues among the last struck before the See lost meaningful secular power in the canton.
