Obverse description Central field displays the crowned shield of Bern bearing the diagonal bear passant, set within a beaded inner circle with a displayed eagle above the shield. The surrounding legend reads MONETA BERNENSIS with the date, rendered in Antiqua script and separated by decorative stops. The overall design is characteristic of early sixteenth-century Swiss municipal coinage, with bold relief and a slightly irregular flan typical of hammered production.
