Obverse description Central field displays the arms of Nidwalden — a key — depicted on an ornate heraldic shield surmounted by a decorative foliate crest, with the initials V and N flanking the shield on either side, denoting Unterwalden Nidwalden. The design is executed in the hammered style typical of 16th-century Swiss cantonal coinage. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding Latin legend. The legend reads MON + NO + VNDERVALDENSI V N, identifying this as the new money of Unterwalden.
