Obverse description Facing enthroned bust of Christ Pantokrator, seated on a high-backed throne, robed in imperial vestments and nimbed, the right hand raised in benediction and the left hand holding a closed book of the Gospels. The abbreviated Greek Christogram IC XC appears in the fields to either side of the figure, dividing the legend. The design closely follows the Venetian grosso prototype introduced under Andronicus II.
