Weissenstein an der Drau — now Slovenian Feistritz ob Drau — issued this notgeld in 1920 during the acute small-change shortage that followed Austria's post-war monetary collapse. Municipal notgeld from Carinthian border towns carries an extra layer of political weight: 1920 was the year of the Carinthian plebiscite, in which the region voted to remain with Austria rather than join the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Whether this particular issue predates or postdates the October vote is worth establishing.

Gutenberghaus in Klagenfurt was the workhorse printer for dozens of Carinthian municipal issues that year, producing utilitarian runs at low cost rather than the decorative collector-targeted notgeld flooding German cities simultaneously.
