| Obverse description | Draped bust of Pope Sixtus V facing left, wearing the papal camauro and vestments, with a short beard rendered in fine strokes characteristic of late sixteenth-century hammered coinage. The effigy occupies the majority of the field, struck on an irregular flan typical of hand-hammered production. A partial Latin legend encircles the bust, reading S • SIXTVS • P • MA •, abbreviated from Sixtus [V], Supreme Pontiff. The strike is somewhat uneven, with portions of the legend weak or partially off-flan at the edges. |
