Obverse description Diademed bust of Queen Victoria facing right, in high relief, with detailed hair and jewelled diadem. The legend VICTORIA REGINA is inscribed around the periphery, and the engraver's signature WOODHOUSE appears in small letters at the base of the truncation.

Reverse description A tied laurel wreath surmounted by a royal crown occupies the centre of the field, enclosing the inscription PRIZE / 1852 in two lines. The circular legend GOVERNMENT SCHOOL OF DESIGN around the upper periphery and ROYAL DUBLIN SOCIETY around the lower periphery frame the design, with the engraver's initials WW appearing below the wreath tie.
