Obverse description Central device depicting Neptune seated left, crowned, holding a trident and a staff bearing a flag with the arms of Liverpool, his left elbow resting on a shield charged with a foul anchor; Britannia seated right in helmet, holding a sceptre, her right elbow resting on a shield bearing a full-rigged ship; between them a caduceus surmounted by the Liver Bird, the whole forming an heraldic achievement. The maker's imprint ELKINGTON & CO and LIVERPOOL appears in the lower field, with the legend INCORPORATED BY SPECIAL ACT OF PARLIAMENT inscribed below the central device.
