Obverse description Minerva seated facing left, wearing a crested helmet and classical drapery, holding an olive branch in her outstretched right hand and resting her left hand on a wheel. The background features a detailed industrial panorama including exhibition buildings and a large iron bridge (the Forth Bridge) in low relief. An engraver's signature appears in the lower exergue.

Reverse description Central device depicts a winged hourglass or electrical coil flanked by spread wings, set against a rectangular magnet emitting radiating lines of force with lightning-bolt arrows indicating magnetic flux. Below the central device is a rectangular tablet bearing the Greek legend ΔΥΝΑΜΑΙ. The circular border legend reads INTERNATIONAL ELECTRIC EXHIBITION EDINBURGH with the date 1890 at the base, separated by two pellets.
